Sibelius has taken some getting used to but one little thing that annoys me is having to always make sure you press escape enough times to get you out of a certain tool - in some ways Sibelius is TOO EASY to use - my students have a project on it and they can get themselves in all kinds of trouble because it's so easy just to do something like grab a bar line and make free-floating measures all of the sudden and they don't know how to get back. I grew up with Finale from like the 3rd version decades ago. I don't believe Sibelius has that.īus most of us are going to dump it to a DAW anyway. For example, last I checked, Finale allowed you to record audio tracks so you could include live instrument tracks (such as vocals) playing along with your virtual instruments. So, in most ways, they are pretty equal - they have just as many annoying features as the other, and they have mostly similar features with a few one has the other doesn't and vice versa - and those might be dealbreakers. So now there can be 3 or 4 ways to do the same thing so that can get kind of confusing for some people. There are many things in Finale that at first were very counterintuitive about how to get to, but were then later simplified, however, they "legacied" the older way of doing it for existing users. And both are so entrenched in their designs that it really comes down to a matter of which workflow you prefer (or in many cases, got used to).

They're pretty mature technologies now so there's not much more better they can do.

My hatred of Avid is counterbalanced by Finale's upgrade policy which is, pay us 75 per upgrade and we will give you a useless feature, and then after 10 upgrades (which would have cost you 750) you could have just waited and upgraded it once for 75, and get all 10 useless features for the price of 1. That said, I just downloaded the trial version of Finale 25 and was shocked - SHOCKED that it looks no different than it always has. However, Microsoft Office has done the same thing in recent years (why do I have to go three levels down just to click print?). Then I saw lots of people complaining about that online as well, so apparently previous versions were better. I will say that when we first got it, it was a new re-design, and when I saw it (coming from Finale) I thought, "this looks like "my first notation program, by Playskool" ". Aside from the Avid thing, there is another dealbreaker for me and that is that the Keypad is not resizable. There are things about it I like better than Finale. But this means I have to use Sibelius at work. That's a very dangerous way the world is going. I absolute despise the scam, I mean, scheme, of subscription.

Our university has a license for Pro Tools, so we got Auralia, Teoria, and Sibelius through AVID. If you don't need that level of customizability, but still want control over most elements, with the ability to still produce similar quality scores, AND, everyone around you is using it, then go with Sibelius. If you are looking to produce Publisher quality scores where customization and/or control over every single element is important, especially with a bent towards modern notation to include graphics and text blocks and so on, Finale becomes the obvious choice, especially given the price and your well warranted, er, let's say "distaste" for Avid (one I share). If you just want something to do some basic notation with, get Musescore.
